What is this all about?

ThatRandomWebsite.com shows a different site every time it is opened or refreshed.

Try it! Just open the main page and you will see a random website, with a special bar at the top. Try refreshing your browser (press F5) and you will see a different site!

How do you decide what sites are shown, and in what order?

This website is linked to a database with exactly 1 million slots - each slot will contain a different website address.

Every time ThatRandomWebsite.com is loaded one of these slots is randomly chosen, and that website is loaded onto your screen. The Roulette Wheel Algorithm is used to choose a random website, lending greater importance to those with a greater number of slots.

How do I list my website in your database?

All 1 million slots in the database are for sale!

Each slot is being sold for $1, and you are welcome to list your site provided it complies with the Site Submission Policy.

What happens if an unsold slot is chosen?

In other words: 'if there are 1 million slots and, say, only 1,000 have been sold, what happens if one of the remaining 999,000 is chosen to load?'

Only the slots that have been sold have a web address associated with them, and only these slots can be selected to load. If just 1,000 slots have been sold then only those websites will be shown on ThatRandomWebsite.com.

What do I get for $1?

You get a place (a 'slot') in the database! And you get it for as long as this website is running. Please note, though, that there is a minimum purchase of $100, which is 100 slots.

ThatRandomWebsite.com is guaranteed to be running until the start of 2012 (about 4 years). But it is hoped that it will be online for much longer than that. If all the slots are sold, we would like to keep it running for at least twice as long as that, probably more.

By having a slot in the database you essentially get a share of the traffic that this website gets. If ThatRandomWebsite.com is receiving 10,000 hits per day and we have sold 1,000 slots, you can expect around 10 hits per day for each slot that you own. The more slots you have the more hits you will get - all for a one-off low payment.

Not only this, but 10% 50% of the money generated from selling these slots will be donated to breast cancer charities. If all the slots are sold, then ThatRandomWebsite will donate $100,000 $500,000

Tell me more about how this helps breast cancer.

Worldwide, breast cancer is the fifth most common form of cancer death, and it is the most common form of cancer death in women (ref: Wikipedia). In 2005 it caused 502,000 deaths worldwide. The number of cases worldwide has also significantly increased since the 1970s.

That Random Website is pledging to give 10% 50% of the revenue generated from selling the slots in this database to breast cancer charities. As there are 1 million slots selling for $1 each, that means that if all slots are sold we will donate $100,000 $500,000 to breast cancer charities.

Not only that, but when you buy slots you can specify where you would like your money to go. Have a look at the list of breast cancer charities if you would like further information.

This money will be donated either:

• as soon as all the slots are sold, or
• on 10th January 2012,

whichever comes first. Please note that if slots are sold after this donation is given we will continue to give 10% 50% of the revenue, but at unspecified intervals.

Is there a minimum purchase required? Can I buy just one slot?

I am sorry to say that there is a minimum purchase of $100.

This is largely because PayPal takes a flat-fee for each transaction, so it does not make financial sense to sell in smaller lots than this. However, you may purchase any figure above this, such as $101 or $102.

Remember, though, the more slots you buy the more hits your site will get!

Why haven't you included XYZ charity? (Or 'You have got something wrong in your list of charities')

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you feel that we have omitted any relevant charity or got anything wrong with any of them. We would like to allow buyers to donate their 10% 50% to any breast cancer charity they would like.

Each $1 slot is currently bringing in (on average) 0.23 hits per day.

Please note that this is an expectation value, and not a guarantee, as the actual sites that are loaded are decided randomly. Some days you may receive more than this, some days less.

How have you worked this out?

This is worked out based on yesterday's hit count (that is, the number of page loads that ThatRandomWebsite.com had yesterday), and the number of slots that have been sold so far.

Yesterday's hit count was 16, and 71 slots have been sold so far.

As these impressions will be divided between the slots in the database, each slot can be expected to receive:

Yesterday's Hit Count ÷ Slots Sold =

= 16 ÷ 71

= 0.225352112676
